Imagine a Dacia Duster, but infused with the raw spirit of the Dakar Rally! But here's where it gets tough: only a tiny handful of these special editions exist, and they're not coming to a dealership near you.
Dacia, celebrating a triumphant victory in the 2026 Dakar Rally, has decided to bring a piece of that desert-conquering allure to everyday life. The result is the Duster Spirit of Sand, a limited-edition model that's more than just a pretty face. It's a fully-equipped, all-wheel-drive powerhouse designed to handle a bit more than your average school run.
This special Duster builds upon the already impressive Extreme trim, but it cranks things up a notch with exclusive decals adorning its lower body. The exterior is finished in a sophisticated Sandstone color, beautifully complemented by Copper Brown side mirrors and striking 17-inch black alloy wheels. It's a look that hints at adventure without being overly aggressive.
And this is the part most people miss: Beyond the aesthetics, the Spirit of Sand boasts a significant upgrade in durability. It comes standard with a robust engine and gearbox protection shield, crafted from a formidable 6 mm (0.23-inch) thick duralumin. This isn't just an optional extra; it's a core feature, offering superior resilience compared to the standard Duster Extreme. While it might not be as overtly wild as the Duster-based Soul Of Dakar concept from late 2024, owners in Romania have the option to further enhance its off-road prowess with accessories like a roof rack, additional LED lights, aggressive BFGoodrich all-terrain tires, and even a 30 mm (1.2-inch) lift kit.
Inside, Dacia has kept the focus on functionality. While there are no excessive decorative flourishes, you get the complete suite of available features as standard. This includes a generous 10.1-inch infotainment system, automatic climate control, a multi-adjustable driver's seat, heated front seats and steering wheel, a Multiview camera for enhanced visibility, and parking sensors. Even for a brand known for its value, the inclusion of adaptive cruise control and blind spot detection is a notable step, especially considering Dacia's historically cautious approach to advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS).
What truly sets the Spirit of Sand apart is its powertrain. It features the brand-new Hybrid-G 150 4x4 powertrain. This innovative system cleverly combines a mild-hybrid setup with bi-fuel capabilities. At its heart is a 1.2-liter turbocharged engine working in tandem with an additional electric motor on the rear axle, powered by a 48V battery. This is all managed by a smooth six-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.
The internal combustion engine delivers 138 hp (103 kW) and 230 Nm (170 lb-ft) of torque, while the electric motor contributes an extra 30 hp (23 kW) and 87 Nm (64 lb-ft). When combined, this potent setup produces a total of 152 hp (113 kW / 154 PS), making it the most powerful Duster ever produced. The real magic, however, lies in its efficiency. Thanks to the hybrid system and a dual-tank setup for gasoline and LPG, the Duster Spirit of Sand boasts an impressive range of up to 1,500 km (932 miles) on a single fill-up!
Now, for the hard truth: The Dacia Duster Spirit of Sand is set to be an exceptionally rare gem. Dacia is only producing 500 units, and they are exclusively destined for the Romanian market. If you're in Romania and have your heart set on one, you can order it online for €28,990 ($34,200), with the first deliveries expected in April 2026.
