In an exciting turn of events, former Alabama defensive lineman James Smith and linebacker Qua Russaw are reportedly set to visit Ohio State as they explore options for transferring. This development has sparked interest among college football fans and analysts alike, particularly because Smith is currently regarded as the top interior defensive lineman available in the transfer portal.
According to a report from 247Sports’ Matt Zenitz, the duo will not only visit Ohio State but will also check out other prominent programs such as Georgia, LSU, Missouri, and Tennessee. Numerous teams are eager to engage with these talented players, showcasing the competitive nature of college football recruiting.
James Smith stands out as a significant prospect. He is ranked as the number one interior defensive lineman and the eighth overall player entering the transfer portal for 2026, according to 247Sports. Having been a five-star recruit in 2023, Smith had a solid junior season at Alabama where he recorded 28 tackles, 6.5 tackles for loss, 2.5 sacks, and even managed a pass breakup.
On the other hand, Qua Russaw, who has been rated as the ninth-best edge rusher and the 47th overall prospect in the portal, started the 2025 season as an outside linebacker for Alabama before suffering an injury that limited his time on the field. In the nine games he played, Russaw amassed 14 tackles and one sack, building on a previous season (2024) where he tallied 30 tackles, two interceptions, 2.5 tackles for loss, a sack, and a forced fumble.
Smith has one year of eligibility left, while Russaw is fortunate enough to have two remaining years. If they choose to transfer together, it would reflect their recruitment journey from Carver High School in Montgomery, Alabama. Both young athletes committed to Alabama as part of the 2023 recruiting class and openly expressed that they wanted to stay together throughout the recruiting process.
In a heartfelt interview with Touchdown Alabama, Russaw described his bond with Smith, stating, "He is my brother. We are always together. We spend time at home, do everything together, and go on all our visits as a duo. We truly are brothers."
On the transfer front, Ohio State has already welcomed one new defensive lineman, former UCF tackle John Walker, and is actively pursuing another defensive standout, Chaz Coleman, who previously played at Penn State. Additionally, the Buckeyes are showing interest in Wisconsin transfer Christian Alliegro, who visited the Ohio State campus recently.
As these developments unfold, the impact on the teams involved and the players’ futures will be closely watched. What do you think about Smith and Russaw's potential move? Will they make the decision to join forces at Ohio State, or could they surprise everyone and choose a different path? Share your thoughts!
