Phoenix's 2000 season: A story of resilience and resurgence. After a disappointing 1999, the Phoenix Mercury (check out their team stats) roared back to life. They missed the playoffs in '99, finishing with a respectable 15-17 record, but the competition in the Western Conference was fierce, with teams like the Houston Comets and Los Angeles Sparks edging them out.
But the Mercury wouldn't stay down. They used that setback as fuel, transforming into a force to be reckoned with in the 2000 season. They finished with an impressive 20-12 record.
Before the season even began, the team faced a challenge. They lost key players Edna Campbell and Toni Foster to an expansion draft (read more about the expansion draft's impact). The WNBA was expanding, adding four new teams: the Indiana Fever, Miami Sol, Portland Fire, and Seattle Storm. Campbell was the second pick, joining the Storm, who also snagged Foster later in the draft.
Despite these losses, Phoenix wasn't deterred. They welcomed fresh talent. Although they didn't have a first-round pick, they made strategic selections in the later rounds, drafting Adrian Williams-Strong in the second round, Tauja Catchings in the third, and Shantia Owens in the fourth. Williams-Strong proved to be a valuable addition, becoming the franchise's fourth All-Star.
The 2000 season kicked off with a triumphant win against the New York Liberty. The Mercury clinched a victory with a score of 51-48, with Brandy Reed leading the charge (read about another standout star). Reed's performance was outstanding, with 22 points, 7 rebounds, 3 blocks, an assist, and a steal. She was the only player to score in double figures.
The Mercury continued their winning streak, defeating the Comets 80-62. Although they stumbled against the Utah Starzz in their third game, they quickly bounced back with a dominant win against the Storm, crushing them 82-49. Reed was again the star, scoring 24 points, along with 5 rebounds and 2 assists.
Bridget Pettis contributed significantly with 15 points, while Michelle Brogan added 14 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists, and a steal.
Phoenix's win percentage of 62.5% placed them fifth in the franchise's history. The 1998 season was slightly better, with the team's most successful seasons taking the top three spots.
The Mercury had a successful season, making the playoffs despite an early exit.
