The buzz surrounding Paul Thomas Anderson's critically acclaimed film, “One Battle After Another”, has reached new heights as it continues its award-winning journey towards the Oscars. Amidst the excitement, a question arises: could this captivating story be expanded upon with a sequel? Teyana Taylor, who brought the character Perfidia to life on screen, certainly thinks so and has been actively discussing the possibility with Anderson himself.
In a recent interview with IndieWire, Taylor shared her enthusiasm for exploring Perfidia's journey further. “I believe there's a need to uncover what Perfidia was up to during those 16 years, and I'd love to see some scenes where Perfidia and Willa intersect,” she explained. “The ending of the film leaves room for hope and the potential for a part two, and I'm eager to uncover more about Willa's journey and her intentions as she walks out that door.”
Taylor's passion for the project is evident, as she emphasized the authenticity of her conversations with Anderson, stating, “I'm actively pleading with PTA to grant us this sequel. I truly believe there's a story worth telling here, and I'm doing my best to make it happen.”
While a sequel may seem unlikely, given Anderson's track record, one can't help but wonder if this could be the exception that proves the rule. After all, the film's success and the demand for more could inspire Anderson to take a different approach. Alternatively, if Anderson chooses to pass on the opportunity, perhaps another talented filmmaker could step in and continue the story, much like the “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” situation Taylor alluded to.
Inspired by Thomas Pynchon's “Vineland,” the film stars Leonardo DiCaprio as Bob Ferguson, an ex-revolutionary driven to rescue his daughter from an evil enemy who has resurfaced after years in hiding. The story's compelling narrative and stellar performances have garnered widespread acclaim, earning it top honors at prestigious award shows such as the BAFTAs, Golden Globes, Critics' Choice Awards, and PGA Awards, among others. Additionally, the film has received an impressive 12 Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture, Best Director, and multiple acting nominations for its stellar cast.
As we eagerly await the Oscars on March 15th, the question remains: will “One Battle After Another” continue its winning streak, or will Ryan Coogler's “Sinners” take the crown? And, of course, the sequel speculation lingers: will Anderson surprise us all and deliver a follow-up, or will another filmmaker step in to continue the story? Only time will tell, but one thing's for sure – the buzz surrounding this film isn't dying down anytime soon.
